| I am a wheelchair user due to my having Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I have been involved with the club for a very long time and I organise all the day to day running of the group, including membership, transport and finances. | I have been a volunteer at the FREEWHEELERS for thirteen years. I enjoy being at the club, for me, it's a good night out. My main task is to help newcomers and volunteers to get to know the members and to feel at ease within the club. | I was in a car crash that injured my spine. At the club I arrange all the social evenings out to the theatre, cinema and night clubs, etc., so I get to talk to each of the members and love every minute of the time I am there. |
The PHAB FREEWHEELERS is an organisation for people, some of whom are physically disabled and some of whom are not. It provides opportunities for people to share in social activities and is a place for making new friends, learning about people, developing different interests and sharing experiences. Originally formed in 1973 to provide a much needed social outlet for three severely disabled teenage boys, the PHAB FREEWHEELERS has developed into one of the largest and most popular organisations for people with disabilities within Staffordshire. |
|
The group attracts an attendance of 85 members at each fortnightly meeting in Stoke-on-Trent and provides opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to share in social activities. What strikes most people when they first come to the freewheelers group, is the warm welcome they receive. There is always a cheerful, good-humoured atmosphere and the meetings are a hum of activity, chatter, fun and friendship. |
| Multi-play games table and disco-deck is available to pass the time, but the majority of members simply enjoy having a cuppa and a chat. |
|
| In addition to the regular gatherings, many other events are organised such as, theatre and cinema visits, tenpin bowling sessions, discos and party events. Games challenges, beauty workshops, art and craft sessions and a healthy living / eating programme are also available for peoples enjoyment. |

| In 1981, the FREEWHEELERS became an affiliated member of the Phab England organisation and so is part of the family of over 270 Phab groups that exist throughout the United Kingdom. Phab works for the integration of people with and without disabilities within the wider community. This starts through using clubs as a "half-way house" where disabled and non-disabled people are able to meet together on an equal basis. Through sharing in the club membership, management and social activities, both people with and without disabilities experience living, working and playing together and so the barriers of fear, embarrassment and ignorance are broken down. | ||

The FREEWHEELERS creates access to many opportunities and experiences. It is an organisation that is about doing things and making things happen. It is about integration at all levels of planning and participation, with equal involvement. It is about life and about living. The freewheelers has a concern for the well being of the individual and seizes each opportunity to emphasise the equality of everyone by empowering, enabling and encouraging them to make the most of their abilities, the most of their ambitions, the most of their friendships and the most of their lives. All the members come to enjoy themselves and to participate in the activities. In coming together, people share friendship and fun. |
